Jabiru was initially built to accommodate and service the nearby Ranger Uranium Mine. Located 256 km east of Darwin, it is owned by the Director of National Parks & Wildlife. Jabiru is completely surrounded by the Kakadu NP and today much of the town’s focus is on tourism, providing accommodation and selling Aboriginal artifacts. Severe flooding along the Arnhem & Kakadu Hwys may be experienced during the wet season (Oct-Apr). Wind Festival (music/dance/art). (Sept). Kakadu NP magnificient park of over 1 million ha featuring Nourlangie Rock with its rock art galleries (34 km south), Yellow Waters cruises (55 km s-w), Jim Jim and Twin Falls and the South Alligator River. Jabiru is named after the Black-necked Stork commonly referred to as the Jabiru (se pic) Accommodation in the area includes two lodges/motels, 2 hotels & 2 caravan parks.
